The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

Mike Weir

The Best Lefthanded Golfers of All Time

Mike Weir is a Professional Golfer from Canada who turned pro in 1992 after a successful college career at Brigham Young University.  He started his career playing mostly on the Canadian Tour and some on the Asian Tour.  He played in just 15 PGA tour events through 1997, making the cut 4 times with 1 finish in the top twenty-five.

In his first year playing regularly on the PGA tour in 1998, he played in 27 tour events and finished in the top ten twice and the top twenty-five three other times.  He earned his first PGA tour victory (at the Air Canada Championship) in September 1999, becoming just the sixth lefthanded golfer ever to win a PGA tour event.  He also had a 2nd place and a 3rd place finish among 7 times in the top ten that year.

Weir continued his success with his 2nd win and another 2nd place finish in 2000, and he earned his 3rd win plus 2 more 2nd place finishes and 1 more 3rd place finish in 2001.  Over 3 years he had 3 wins, finished 4 times in 2nd place and 2 times in 3rd, among 21 times in the top ten and 41 times in the top twenty-five.  By the end of 2001 he was ranked #12 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Weir slumped a bit in 2002, but then came back stronger than ever in 2003.  He finished in a tie for 9th to start the year, and then earned his 4th career win in week two.  He finished tied for 3rd the following week, and then earned his 5th career win in his 4th event of the year.  Less than two months later, Weir earned his 6th career win at the Masters Tournament, becoming just the 2nd lefthanded golfer (after Bob Charles and before Phil Mickelson) to win one of golfs’ Major Tournaments.  He had reached the rank of #3 in the OWGR, and remained in the top ten for most of 2003 and 2004.

Weir earned his 7th career win and had another 2nd place finish in 2004, and then another 2nd place finish in 2005.  In 2006 he had a 3rd place finish.  In 2007 he earned his 8th and last tour victory.  In 2008 he had a pair of 2nd place finishes and in 2009 he had a 2nd place and a 3rd place finish.  Through 2009 he was still ranked in the top 50 in the OWGR.

Weir had 1 more top ten finish in 2010, but since then he has struggled with injuries and poor performance.  He did come back for a 2nd place finish in 2014, but only 1 other time in the top twenty-five since then.  He has been playing recently on the Korn Ferry Tour (2018-2020) in order to get his game back to PGA Tour caliber and Mike Weir caliber.  He recently turned 50 years old has has begun to play in the PGA Champions/Seniors Tour, where he has played in 13 events and has finished in 2nd place twice and long with 3 other times in the top 10.

For his career on the PGA tour, Weir has played in 458 tournaments, with his 8 wins, 10 times in 2nd and 8 times in 3rd place among 69 times in the top ten and 140 times in the top twenty-five.  His total earnings of $28,021,982 leaves him currently the 48th all-time leading money winner on the tour.  Only Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson rank ahead of Weir among lefthanded golfers in PGA wins and prize money earned.
