The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

Petra Kvitova is a professional tennis player from the Czech Republic who turned pro in 2006.  By the end of 2008 she had reached the ranking of #44 on the WTA Tour.  She faltered a bit in 2009 and ended the year ranked #62, but then she improved in 2010, making the semifinals at Wimbledon, and ending the year ranked #34.

Kvitova made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2011, and then won her first Grand Slam Title at Wimbledon.  By the end of October she was ranked #2 and she held that rank through February 2012, then gradually fell in the rankings and ended the year ranked #8.  She was a steady performer through 2013 and ended the year ranked #6.  Her second Wimbledon Title was the highlight of 2014 for Kvitova.  She stuggled with various injuries and illness for parts of the next two years, but played well enough when she did play to stay within the top ten for most of that time.

Kvitova suffered knife wounds to her left hand in a home invasion near the end of 2016 and missed over five months of action while she recovered.  She showed flashes of her best tennis but was inconsistent and fell out of the top ten and ended 2017 ranked #29.  She earned her way back into the top ten in 2018, up as high as #2 for a brief time in 2019.  She is currently ranked #11 in April 2021, and at age 31 she still has many more years of great tennis in front of her.
