Ken Stabler

Ken Stabler played college football at the University of Alabama, leading them to an 11-0 record in 1966, but he and the team stumbled a bit in his senior year finishing with a record of 8-2-1.  He was a second round draft choice by the Oakland Raiders in 1968.

Stabler rarely played in his first few years with the Raider, but he became the Raiders regular starter in 1973 and quickly became one of best quarterbacks in the game.  He started 94 games over the next 7 years with the Raiders, then played two more years with the Houston Texans and two more years with the New Orleans Saints.  Over his career Stabler won 96 games with 49 losses and 1 tie game.  He completed 2270 passes in 3793 attempts for a 59.8% completion percentage.  He passes for 27,938 yards (58th all-time)  with 194 touchdowns (49th all-time) and 194 interceptions.

Stabler made the Pro Bowl four times (1973, 1974, 1976 & 1977), was First-Team All Pro and NFL MVP in 1974 and 1976, and NFL Most Valuable Player in 1976 when he led the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI.  He was the first successful lefthanded quarterback in the NFL, the first to achieve any NFL awards, the first to play regularly on television and the first to play and to win in the playoffs.  He was the pioneer as a lefthander in a righthanded world, and he remained a role model for lefthanders for many years.

After his player career Stable worked as a color commentator for NFL telecasts, and then for University of Alabama football.  He was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2016, one year after his death.
