The Success and The Failures of Lefthanders in Sports

Steve Young played college football at Brigham Young University, and after struggling for the first 3 years he had a spectacular senior year, passing for 3902 yards and 33 touchdowns, with an NCAA record 71.3% completion percentage, plus 544 yards rushing.

Young began his professional career with the Los Angeles Express of the newly formed USFL, but after his new team went bankrupt he joined the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucanneers.  He started 14 games for the Bucs in 1986, but after the season they traded him to the San Francisco 49ers, where he served the next 4 years as a backup to all-time great Joe Montana.

In 1991, Young finally became the regular starter and for the next eight years he was one of the best quarterbacks in the game.  He career record was 94 wins and 49 losses in 143 games started.  He completed 2667 passes in 4149 attempts for a 64.3% completion percentage (9th all-time).  He threw for 33,124 yards (35th all-time)  with 232 touchdowns (30th all-time) and 107 interceptions.

Young made the Pro Bowl seven times (1992-1998), and was 1st team All-Pro team in 1992, 1993 and 1994), and was NFL Most Valuable Player in 1992 and 1994.  He led the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory in 1994.  Young is also a well-known commentator and analyst of the NFL on television and radio.
